Bane, the Black Lord, God of Tyranny, Hatred, and Strife. Myrkul, the Lord of Bones, God of the Dead, and Bhaal, the Lord of Murder, God of Death. How did the Dead Three become dark gods in Dungeons & Dragons? Once a tyrant, a necromancer, and an assassin, they were mortals driven by an insatiable hunger for power. United by ambition, the Three forged a pact to achieve godhood or perish trying, setting their sights on Jergal, the Lord of the End of Everything, the all-powerful dark deity.
Their journey led them to the Gray Waste, where the ominous Castle of Bones stood as the sit of Jergal’s power. Together, they fought through endless hordes of skeletons, zombies, spectres, wraiths, and powerful liches. Finally reaching Jergal, they found not a hostile god, but one who was bored of the monotony as an all-powerful dark deity. “The throne is yours. I’ve grown weary of this empty power. Take it if you wish. I promise to serve and guide you as your seneschal until you grow comfortable with the position.
But who among you shall rule?” Former allies turned rivals. The three prepared to battle. Their alliance forgotten in the quest for supreme power. Not wanting an endless battle, Jergal suggested the Three each take part of his dominion, dividing the duties among them. Jergal left the division of power to Tymora, the Goddess of Luck, by having the Three play a game of knucklebones. Victorious in the game, Bane claimed the domain of tyranny and strife, becoming the god of domination for those who would rule through fear.
Second place brought Myrkul the realm of death and decay, ruling over the inevitability of mortality, and the journey to the afterlife. Bhaal embraced the domain of murder, becoming the patron of assassins, and those who glorify death in all its brutality. Thus the Three ascended to godhood, each reigning over their domain, spreading fear throughout the realms. Their evil carried forth by their followers, who continue to spread tyranny, death, and murder in the names of their dark gods.
