How did Vecna become a lesser deity in Dungeons & Dragons, whose power and malevolence echo across the multiverse? He was once a human king who turned into a lich. His ever-growing power led him on a path of conquest and the desire for godhood. His zeal for secrecy led to him being worshipped as a god, even before any form of ascension. Among his devoted followers, a heartless paladin rose through the ranks, eventually known by all as Kas the Bloody-handed. Kas became Vecna’s most trusted lieutenant with his unwavering loyalty.
Vecna granted Kas unnatural longevity, using his necromantic magic. Vecna forged a mighty sword for his lieutenant as an instrument of his authority. This artifact, the Sword of Kas, makes him almost invincible. Vecna infused a bit of his own essence in the Sword of Kas to spy on Kas. This mistrust would prove to be a mistake. The sword, sentient with Vecna’s evil, whispered to Kas. It planted seeds of betrayal and ambition in his mind, while feeding misinformation of Kas’s loyalty to Vecna.
Kas’s chance to kill and usurp Vecna came, when Vecna accumulated enough power and magic for ascension to godhood. In the rotted tower, when Vecna began the ritual, gathering power to ascend to godhood, the Sword of Kas signaled for the strike. At the crucial moment, Kas betrayed his master, interrupting the ritual of godhood. Kas charged in with the Sword of Kas, engaging Vecna in an epic battle. In a decisive moment, Kas struck a major blow, severing Vecna’s left hand.
His body crumbling from Vecna’s retaliating spell, Kas pressed the attack, plunging his sword into the lich’s eye, gouging it out. The sword, sensing victory, released a surge of energy into Vecna’s body. The cataclysmic explosion destroyed the rotted tower and the surrounding lands. In the aftermath, only the eye and hand of Vecna were found intact, transformed into artifacts of terrible power by their master’s will. Though physically destroyed, Vecna’s spirit endured, drawing power from faithful followers, and those corrupted by his evil artifacts: The Eye of Vecna and Hand of Vecna.
Through centuries of cult worship, Vecna achieved demigod status, becoming one of the most corrupt powers of the Astral Sea To this day, Vecna schemes for greater power, his ambition to become a Greater Deity driving his eternal machinations.
