In the Dungeons & Dragons 5e Multiverse, reality is organized in the Great Wheel Cosmology. The Multiverse consists of different planes of existence, defined in relation to the Material Plane. At the center lies the Material Plane, the primary setting for most adventures, containing worlds like the Forgotten Realms and Greyhawk. Adjacent to the Material Plane lie two reflective realms within the Ethereal Plane: the Enchanted Feywild and the Gloomy Shadowfell.
The Feywild mirrors the Material Plane with nature and magic amplified. Colors are more vivid, and Fey creatures dance in revelry. The Shadowfell mirrors the Material Plane in darkness and despair. It houses shadow creatures, undead and Ravenloft’s Domains of Dread. The Material Plane, being the only plane connected to both Transitive Planes, is an important crossroad of the Multiverse. The Ethereal Plane, a dimension of ghosts and spirits, touches the worlds in the Material Plane at all points, binding them to the Inner Planes.
The Astral Plane, a silvery void serving as the highway of the Multiverse, interconnects the worlds in the Material Plane and the Outer Planes. Through the Ethereal Plane lies the Inner Planes, comprising four Elemental Planes of water, earth, air and fire. The regions where the Elemental Planes collide are called Para-Elemental Planes. Their elemental substances overlap into ice, ooze, ash and magma. Two Energy Planes permeates all other planes.
The Positive Plane exists like a dome above, while the Negative Plane is cupped like a bowl beneath. The Outer Planes embody moral and ethical alignments in a wheel. With planes of good above, planes of evil below, planes of law to the left, and planes of chaos to the right. The Upper Planes consists of realms aligned from Lawful Good on the left to Neutral Good and Chaotic Good to the right. The Lower Planes consists of realms from Lawful Evil to the left, to Neutral Evil and Chaotic Evil to the right.
The planes between the Upper and Lower Planes are realms of Lawful Neutral and Chaotic Neutral. The Outlands represents True Neutral. Sigil, the City of Doors at its center, connects all planes through countless portals. Beyond the known Multiverse lies the Far Realm, where cosmic horrors dwell in geometry that defies reality’s laws.
