The Nine Archdevil Rulers of Baator in Dungeons & Dragons. Baator, or the Nine Hells, has nine distinct layers, each ruled by a powerful Archdevil. The first layer, Avernus, is a scorched wasteland where the Blood War rages between devils and demons. Zariel, once a celestial angel, now rules Avernus as its Archduchess. She leads hellish legions in eternal war against demons of the Abyss. The second layer, Dis, is an endless iron city of spires and labyrinthine streets, where bureaucracy and corruption reign. Dispater, the Iron Duke, rules from his impregnable tower.
Known for his paranoia, he weaves a vast network of spies and political intrigue throughout his realm. The third layer, Minauros, drowns in endless toxic swamps and poisonous rain, where crumbling cities slowly sink. Mammon, the embodiment of greed, rules Minauros, surrounding himself with cursed treasures scattered throughout his fetid domain. The fourth layer, Phlegethos, is a realm of fire and passion, where cities perch precariously on sides of volcanic peaks. Belial rules Phlegethos with his daughter Fierna in a complex and potentially troubling relationship.
Belial is an ancient Archdevil focused on temptation and domination, while Fierna represents a newer generation of more subtle manipulation. The fifth layer, Stygia, lies frozen in bitter cold, where the river Styx flows through massive glaciers. Levistus rules Stygia while eternally imprisoned in ice, punished by Asmodeus, yet still wielding power through cunning and manipulation. The sixth layer, Malbolge, defies mapping as its terrain constantly changes, creating an ever-evolving maze of treachery.
Glasya, daughter of Asmodeus, rules Malbolge. She is unpredictable and capricious, known for her unexpected gambits and rebellious subversiveness. The seventh layer, Maladomini, is a realm reflecting failed ambition. It’s once great cities reduced to decaying ruins. Baalzebul, the Slug Archduke, rules Maladomini, a fallen Archdevil whose domain reflects his own decline. The eighth layer, Cania, embodies absolute cold, where even thoughts can freeze in the endless winter storms.
Mephistopheles rules Cania. A master of arcane knowledge he is constantly plotting to usurp greater power, and Asmodeus himself. The ninth layer, Nessus, is a featureless plane with canyons reaching into the deepest depths of existence. Asmodeus, the Lord of the Nine Hells, rules from Nessus as the supreme ruler of Baator. One of the most powerful entities in the multiverse, he orchestrates the eternal machinations of the Nine Hells, embodying ultimate tyranny and control.
